Although less common than the manipulation of photos and audio, edited video recordings for nefarious purposes are becoming increasingly prevalent. With the rise in availability of free video editing software packages, the editing of video is more prominent than ever before. Authentication by a forensic video expert can detect tampering and manipulations made to video recordings. Our expertise in this area is evidenced by work performed for organisations such as the United Nations, and research published and presented at international forensic conferences.

Types of cases

We perform authentication of video recordings in all sectors including for use in criminal and civil trials, family court, family courts and tribunals.

As our duty is to the court and not the instructing party we can perform work on the instruction of both prosecution and defence, and can offer rates that meet those of the Legal Aid Agency accordingly.

We can perform authentication examinations on all video recordings, regardless of the capture method or format, including:

• CCTV video recordings

• Mobile phone video recordings (from all models, including iPhone, Samsung, Nokia)

• Body Worn Camera video recordings (for example those worn by Police or Bailiffs)

• Social media video recordings

• Vehicle Dash Camera video recordings

Types of Manipulations

As we use a variety of techniques, each devised to identify a different trace left by the video editing process, we can detect a variety of manipulations, including:

• Deleted sections / Removal of sections

• Cloned sections

• Replaced sections

• Trimmed recordings

• Recordings purported to be from a different device

All of our digital video forensics techniques have been or are in the process of being validated as we work towards gaining accreditation to the ISO 17025 and ILAC G19 standards.
